Marlins Lose 2017 Baseball Opener to Nationals

WASHINGTON, DC — The Miami Marlins opened the 2017 major league baseball season on Monday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals.

The game started at 1:05 p.m.

The Marlins were holding a 2-0 lead after four innings, but the Nationals cut the lead to one in the seventh and then pulled ahead.

Edinson Volquez, who signed a two-year deal with the Marlins on Dec. 1, 2016, made his third career opening day start, while Stephen Strasburg took the mound for the Nationals.

Volquez pitched five innings before leaving with the Marlins still on top.

Coming into the game, Miami was batting .263 as a team on opening day, averaging 5.04 runs per game in season openers.

The Club record for runs scored on opening day is 12 in a 2009 win over the Nationals at Sun Life Stadium, according to the Florida club.

The Marlins will host the Atlanta Braves in the first home game of the 2017 season at 7:10 p.m. on April 11 at Marlins Park.

The Fish finalized the 2017 Opening Day roster on Sunday with 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders.

PITCHERS: RHP Kyle Barraclough, LHP Wei-Yin Chen, LHP Adam Conley, RHP Tom Koehler, RHP
Dustin McGowan, RHP David Phelps, RHP AJ Ramos, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP José Ureña, RHP Edinson Volquez, RHP Nick Wittgren and RHP Brad Ziegler.

CATCHERS: A.J. Ellis and J.T. Realmuto.

INFIELDERS: Justin Bour, Derek Dietrich, Dee Gordon, Adeiny Hechavarria, Tyler Moore and Miguel Rojas.

OUTFIELDERS: Marcell Ozuna,Giancarlo Stanton, Ichiro Suzuki and Christian Yelich.

The Marlins began the season with three players on the 10-day disabled list: RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (with a left oblique strain), LHP Jeff Locke (suffering from left shoulder tendinitis) and INF
Martín Prado (suffering from left hamstring strain).
