Miami-Dade County School Board Elects Chair, Vice Chair

The district has 356,480 students.

Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman was elected chair of the Miami-Dade County School Board on Tuesday for the 2016-2017 school year.

Miami-Dade County is considered the fourth largest school district in the United States with some 356,480 students. The board is comprised of nine members, who are elected from individual single-member districts to serve four-year terms on a staggered basis.

Feldman, representing District 9, was first elected to the school board in 2008 and served as vice chair in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Dr. Marta Pérez was also elected vice chair. Representing District 8, she was first elected to the board in 1998 and served as vice chair in 2008.

The Board sets district policy and appoints a superintendent, who in turn selects administrators to head the system's administrative divisions and carry out policy.

Board Members Susie Castillo, Feldman, Lubby Navarro and Dr. Martin Karp were sworn in on Tuesday to represent Districts 5, 9, 7 and 3, respectively.

Dr. Steve Gallon III and Mari Tere Rojas were newly sworn in as board members for Districts 1 and 6 respectively.
