Miami-Dade Schools Add Days For Hurricane Irma

School officials added five new regular school days to the 2017-18 school calendar to make up for the seven days lost during Hurricane Irma.

MIAMI, FL — The Miami-Dade County School Board has added five new regular school days to the 2017-18 school calendar to make up for the seven days lost during Hurricane Irma. Meeting on Wednesday, the board converted five special session dates to regular school days. These include two teacher planning days and three planned secondary early release days.

"As a result of Hurricane Irma, Miami-Dade County Public Schools had to cancel seven days of school last month. Even with the loss of the seven instructional days, the district exceeds the minimum instructional hours required by the state in order to participate in the Florida Education Finance Program," district officials said. "However, the loss of instructional time resulted in impacts to student learning and therefore adjustments to the school calendar were necessary to return this valuable time to students and teachers."
