Miami youth musicians heading to perform at Disney
This is the fourth consecutive year that South Florida Music's Year 2 Piano Performance Group has been selected to perform at Disney

South Florida Music’s Piano Year 2 Performance Group is heading to Disney this week to perform at Disney Springs’ Waterside Stage on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 12:15pm.
The performance will be livestreamed on South Florida Music’s Facebook page @southflmusic.
The group, made up of Miami 6-8 year olds, is among the youngest musicians ever invited to perform by Walt Disney World.

Led by Directors Dr. Joy Galliford, Mrs. Alaina Lorenzo, and Mrs. Karen Flanary, the group will perform an energetic repertoire of Disney and classic compositions, song and dance.
Dr. Joy said her young musicians are ready to thrill the audience as they demonstrate their mastery and love for music. “I am extremely proud of every one of these performers and their families for representing South Florida Music. I am delighted to begin 2020 at Disney, the happiest place on earth!”

Virtually every one of these 18 budding musicians began their musical journeys as toddlers in early childhood music classes at South Florida Music, where they sang and clapped along with their parents, learned to play the glockenspiel, and began to read music.
Classes are held at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County, including at Redeemer Church in South Miami, Christ the King Lutheran Church and Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, Central Presbyterian Church in Kendall, St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove, and Crossbridge Church Key Biscayne.
For over 35 years Dr. Joy’s research-based music program has been reaching children at the most crucial stages of their mental growth.
Dr. Joy said that parents enrolled in the South Florida Music program quickly learn that music is a powerful contributor towards a child’s overall development.
“When you truly understand that a child’s most rapid period of brain development is birth to 1 followed by 3-9, parents should look for activities that provide the most intentional engagement to increase development,” said Dr. Joy. “If we all understand that and take it to heart, we can be more intentional about what we choose to do during the foundational years to help children unlock their potential, and I believe that music is an important part.”
Months of two-hour rehearsals (in addition to their usual weekly group piano classes) will culminate in the group’s 24 minute performance of piano arrangements of Star Wars, It’s a Small World and Ode to Joy” and singing Rock Around the Clock and a Disney medley which includes You’ve Got a Friend in Me and Hakuna Matata.
