Quinceañera Surprise Celebrates Homeless Teen's Birthday

MIAMI, FL — For years, the Cover Girls, a group of women mentors and volunteers, have celebrated the birthdays of the homeless children and teenagers staying at the Miami Rescue Mission.

“It makes them feel special. Every month, they get the names from the case workers of kids who have birthdays, and they handle everything,” Daisy Diaz, gifts and marketing senior manager for MRM, said. “They bring the cake, decorations, the gifts. It’s amazing.”

When the Cover Girls learned Adriana Palmas was turning 15 in February, they decided to organize something extra special for the teen: a Parisian-themed quinceañera.

In Hispanic culture, the quinceañera is an important milestone for girls, Diaz said.

Adriana has been living at the Miami Rescue Mission homeless shelter with her family, including her younger brothers, since last year. They initially moved to South Florida from Mexico when her father found work there.

“Her father’s job never happened because of the pandemic,” Diaz said. “They were living out of a van for a while.”

The quinceañera was a way to bring some joy to Adriana and her family, especially when they were so far away from the rest of their family in Mexico on this important day, she said. Everything — from Adriana’s pink dress, make-up artists and hair stylists to the cake, decoration and gifts — was donated for the celebration.

“It was amazing. Adriana was overwhelmed. Everybody was in tears,” Diaz said. “It was a chance for her to have her dream quinceañera. The Cover Girls wanted to give her that dream. She was in tears and smiling all day.”
