The victim, identified as Lazaro Perea Suarez, was patrolling Collins Park on foot near Collins Avenue and 21 Avenue around 10 p.m. on Feb. 22 when he was confronted by the three suspects, who took his iPhone 7 and struck him in the face.

"Mr. Suarez stated that while on patrol, he spotted a black male ... standing in front of him staring directly at him," according to the police report. "Subsequently, another black male ... came from behind and pointed a gun to Mr. Suarez' neck. The male suspect ... pointing the gun stated: 'money, money' multiple times. A third black male ... was standing next to Mr. Suarez while the robbery was taking place."

Police said that Suarez turned abruptly and knocked the weapon out of the suspect's hand onto the grass. He then struck one of the suspects, injuring his left hand.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects was able to retrieve the handgun that had been knocked away. The suspect pointed the weapon at Suarez while the three suspects made their way back to the Ford Taurus, which they used to flee west on 22 Street.
