South FL Teacher Broke Student’s Arm While Breaking Up Fight: Reports

A Miami teacher faces charges after breaking up a play fight and fracturing a 12-year-old charter school student's arm, reports said.

MIAMI, FL — A former teacher faces charges after fracturing a student’s arm while breaking up a fight at a Miami charter school, according to multiple reports.

Joel Insilo, 30, initially was charged Monday with aggravated child abuse, a felony, though this was reduced to culpable negligence during his Tuesday court appearance, NBC Miami reported.

He grabbed a 12-year-old by the arm when trying to break up a play fight Monday at KIPP Miami Public Schools, a college-preparatory school, according to WSVN.

The student landed on his left arm, fracturing it, reports said. The boy was brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm that a student was injured yesterday on campus. Our facility worked swiftly to ensure medical attention was received. An investigation has been launched and we are fully cooperating with authorities. As of the time of the incident, the involved employee was removed from campus and is no longer employed at KIPP Miami,” a spokesperson for the school told CBS Miami.

Insilo served as associate dean of culture at KIPP since August 2022, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before this, he was an English teacher at the school.

Prior to this, he was a creative writing professor at The SEED School of Miami, where he worked with high-risk students.
