AT&T Completes More Than 350 South Florida Network Upgrades
The upgrades are among more than 1,400 completed statewide year-to-date

In the first 6 months of 2019, AT&T completed more than 1,400 upgrades to its wireless network statewide -- including more than 350
in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The enhancements mean better reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for customers. First responders using the FirstNet communications platform will also benefit from the network upgrades.
The network enhancements include:
- Nearly 1,100 capacity upgrades to cell sites to accommodate more network traffic
- 350+ in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area
- 115+ in West Palm Beach-Treasure Coast area
- Nearly 100 in the Jacksonville market
- Nearly 200 in Tampa-St. Petersburg area
- 165+ in the Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne market
- Deployment of small cells to densify the AT&T network and provide additional coverage
- 5 new cell sites
- 1 in Palm Harbor
- 1 in Davenport
- 1 in Lake Nona
- 2 in Orlando
- 9 new Distributed Antenna Systems at public venues, such as a South Florida mall, a Central Florida theme park, and several South Florida resorts
- Expansion of existing Distributed Antenna Systems at key venues, including the raceway in Daytona, the international airports in Miami and Orlando, and at the Miami pro football stadium.
- Launch of 5G in parts of Orlando
AT&T also brought in extra network support at several special events this year to help keep customers connected. The company rolled in mobile cell sites for Miami’s big boat show, SunFest in West Palm Beach, the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, the tennis open in Miami, and the big Miami music festival in Virginia Key Beach Park.
“The more customers engage with premium content, the more access they will need to highspeed connectivity,” said Joe York, AT&T Florida president. “That’s why we continue to invest heavily in our network.”
AT&T invested more than $3.2 billion in its Florida wireless and wired networks during 2016-2018 to boost service. This investment includes: - More than $1 billion in Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach
- Nearly $425 million in Orlando
- More than $175 in Tampa
- More than $300 million in Jacksonville
The AT&T LTE network covers more than 400 million people in North America. By building out its 4G LTE network, AT&T says its boosting network speeds and capacity as it continue to expand the availability of its network and upgrade its technology.
