Woman Throws Nephew Into Bay, Jumps In After Him Naked: Miami Police

MIAMI, FL — A woman who threw her 3-year-old nephew into Brickell Bay and jumped into the water naked after him Thursday morning faces “some very serious charges,” Capt. Freddie Cruz, the spokesperson for the Miami Police Department, said during a news conference.

Officers responded to reports of criminal mischief at 609 Brickell Ave. just after 8:30 a.m. Callers told police that there was “a young lady starting some sort of damage,” Cruz said.

After they arrived, she took off her clothes, threw the boy into the water and then jumped in.

“There is nothing normal about this,” Cruz said, adding, “It’s just disturbing. He entrusts his aunt to take care of him and she actually threw him in the water with her.”

Officers tried to convince her to get out of the water, but she swam away from them. The boy was crying during the incident.

The marine patrol unit was eventually able to pull both of them from the bay off the shore of Brickell Key Island.

“A couple more minutes in the water, we could have had two fatals,” the captain said.

The woman and child were brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital for evaluation, police said. Neither were injured and authorities determined the woman, who hasn’t been named, had a “normal state of mind and was OK to face charges,” Cruz said.

She was taken into custody after being evaluated at the hospital and will face charges including criminal mischief and child abuse, he said.

Her nephew was taken into custody by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
