Developers Will Have to Pay to Close Roads

Miami Beach recently imposed additional restrictions and increased fees related to street closings.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — With so many construction projects underway, traffic has been a bigger headache than usual for the tourists who come to soak up the sunshine and experience this city's beautiful beaches and sizzling nightlife.

City officials in turn are warning developers that they recently imposed additional restrictions and increased fees related to street closings around major Miami Beach thoroughfares during morning and afternoon commutes.

“We are committed to improving mobility in any way we can,” according to Miami Beach City Commissioner John Elizabeth Alemán. “This ordinance provides an incentive for construction companies to perform work outside of peak travel times when our residents are trying to get to work and school. It also aims to move lane closures to side streets versus heavily used right-of-ways.”

The new restrictions for road closures along major thoroughfares are in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

With the exception of emergency engineering projects, no lane closures are permitted during those hours.

The increased fees start at $100 and can go up to $1,000 for lane closures along major arteries such Alton Road, Collins Avenue, 17 Street, 41 Street, Pine Tree Drive, 63 Street and others.
