Miami Beach to Honor Former Deputy Police Chief
The South Pointe Park fountain will be dedicated to Mark Overton, who passed away after a lifetime of community service.

MIAMI BEACH — City commissioners on Wednesday voted to dedicate the South Pointe Park Fountain in honor of former Deputy Police Chief Mark N. Overton, who passed away in November.
The plaque will read: "In Memory of Miami Beach Police Department Veteran Mark N. Overton."

Overton, a city native, joined the Miami Beach Police Department in March 2012 after 28 years of service with the Hialeah Police Department.
He went on to become chief of the nearby Bal Harbour Police Department.

“Chief Overton will always be remembered and beloved in our community. He was a professional who showcased the very finest values of our department
— a man of honor, integrity and dedication,” according to Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel Oates. “He loved South Pointe Park, and placing his memorial there is an ideal tribute to his memory.”
Throughout his 32-year law enforcement career, Overton received several career honors and awards, including Officer of the Year, the Purple Heart, Combat Cross, Distinguished Service, Outstanding Supervisor, and Administrative Excellence.
The village of Bal Harbour appointed Overton Police Chief in January 2014.
"He passed away on Nov. 3, 2016, but his remarkable legacy will continue to live on in the South Florida community," according to a Miami Beach spokesperson. "The City of Miami Beach also proclaimed Dec. 14, 2016 as Chief Mark N. Overton Day."
