Miami Beach Street Honors Influential Women's Group

The next time you drive along 24 Street you may want to remember the influential women who helped shape Miami Beach.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — The next time you drive along 24 Street you may want to remember the influential women who helped shape Miami Beach into one of the great resort cities in the United States. If you ever need a reminder, just look up at the street sign. As of this week, 24 street is also called Miami Beach Woman's Club Way.

The Miami Beach Woman's Club was established by a group of influential women following the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926. The devastating Category 4 hurricane brought a 10 foot storm surge onto Miami Beach and the barrier islands. The National Weather Service said that water from the Atlantic extended across Miami Beach and Biscayne Bay into the city of Miami.

The founding members of the club hoped to spark neighborly friendships and strengthen the community through culture and camaraderie. (Sign up for our free Daily Newsletters and Breaking News Alerts for the Miami Beach Patch.)

“The ladies behind the historic building on Collins Avenue have spent decades helping build up Miami Beach to the world-class city we have today,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Ricky Arriola. “In honor of their unwavering dedication to the community, we will designate 24 Street as Woman’s Way.”
