Rainbow Flag-Raising Ceremony Kicks Off Gay Pride Week

The celebration comes just days after the death of the man who created the iconic flag.

MIAMI BEACH — The city kicked off Gay Pride Week on Monday with a ceremonial raising of the rainbow flag over city hall.

"As one of the most gay-friendly destinations worldwide, the rainbow flag flies year-round alongside the American flag on Miami Beach," explained Melissa Berthier of the city of Miami Beach.

Monday's ceremony came several days after the death of Gilbert Baker, who took his sewing skills and created the iconic rainbow flag of the LGBTQ community.

The 65-year-old Baker died Friday at his home in Manhattan.
