Hostel prices – Hostel dorms run between $25-35 per night while single rooms start around $75 for a double. Hostels give free WiFi, free linens, and a free meal.

Budget hotel prices – Budget hotels in Chicago start at around $75 per night and move up to $155 (or more) when you get closer to the city core. At the lower end of the price spectrum, you can find free WiFi, special bathrooms, heating and air-conditioning, and parking. Some hotels give free breakfast. On Airbnb, most shared rooms range between $18-25 and entire homes start around $50 (expect to pay closer to $150, however).

The normal cost of food – You can eat in various restaurants in the city for less than $25. Chicago developed the wide dish pizza, as well as the stuffed shell pizza, and no tour is complete without trying at least one. The deep-dish pizza was created by Pizzeria Uno, which is now a general restaurant chain. Many Chicagoans warrant by Lou Malnati’s. Chicago is also home to various farmers markets for some good fruit and veggies, but the prices tend to be a bit expensive than the supermarkets. If you cook your food, expect to pay $62 per week for groceries that will include pasta, vegetables, chicken, and other essential foods. For affordable food, like burgers, hot dogs, and pizza, required to pay around $8 for a meal.

Transportation costs – There are many buses and trains (known as the “L”) will get you to wherever you want to go. On the city, a single ride is $2.28 per ride, and a bus ride is $3 (if you’re a student, the price is as cheap as $0.77). The CTA uses transportation cards, which can be filled with any amount from $3, or as high as $110. Transit cards are needed to ride CTA trains and are accessible from vending machines stationed at all train stations. There are also guest passes that will allow you to have unlimited rides for a specific amount of days. 1-day: $10, 3-day: $22, 7-day: $29.

Suggested daily budget – $60-80 (Note: This is a proposed budget considering you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a few, cooking most of your meals, not drinking heavily, and using local transportation.)
