Today's riddle: What do you call a one-legged Big Foot? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. New Smyrna Beach Passes $200 Million Budget (newsdaytonabeach.com) — New Smyrna Beach's City Commission has approved a roughly $200.7 million FY 2027 budget while keeping the main millage rate flat, but raising the debt-service millage to fund obligations and conservation land at Turnbull Creek. The plan adds three positions, boosts capital and infrastructure spending, and followed some tense debate before commissioners ultimately voted unanimously.
2. King tides carve sand cliffs into Volusia County's newly renourished New Smyrna Beach (arcpublishing.com) — Steep four- to five-foot sand cliffs now line much of New Smyrna Beach, just months after a major renourishment project, making beach access trickier and exposing seawalls. County officials say the king-tide erosion is part of the sand's protective role, but locals are frustrated and worried about both safety and the record number of sea turtle nests already lost.
3. Volusia deputy rescues 72-year-old man after wheelchair falls into New Smyrna Beach marina (fox35orlando.com) — Emergency crews in New Smyrna Beach pulled a 72-year-old man from dark marina water after he fell from his wheelchair and was found clinging to a pipe. A Volusia County sheriff's sergeant jumped in with a rescue buoy, guided him to a staircase, and local paramedics say he's now expected to recover.
4. Businesses get set for Florida's minimum wage to rise to $15 an hour (news-journalonline.com) — Florida's minimum wage rises to $15 an hour on September 30, and businesses from Daytona Beach to State Road 44 near New Smyrna Beach are already posting hiring signs and wage notices. Local workers and small business owners across the state are weighing how the increase will affect paychecks, prices, and staffing in the months ahead.
