Five Questions That Tell Us, Music Matters.

What can music do for our kids? And what should we consider when choosing an instrument?

Tucked away in Grand Trinity Plaza, at 4112 Little Road, is Music Matters - a lively music center owned by Kevin and Barbara Abendroth.  An appealing display of instruments meets the eye upon entering the store. This music academy features 15 deluxe studios and offers individual and group lessons in many disciplines, including guitar, piano, drums, violin, voice, band and organ. Kevin Abendroth shared his insights on the results he has noted when music training is begun at an early age.

Patch: Is there a "best choice" for an instrument when children begin music instruction?

Abendroth: If the child is between 4 and 6 years old, the piano or violin is generally best. Drums can also work well. Other instruments are generally too large or cumbersome for a child younger than 7.

Patch: What instrument would you say is most favorable for an older child, say middle school or high school?

Abendroth: Let the child's passion be the guide. If your son has a drive to learn the guitar or your daughter wishes to learn the flute, then that is the best instrument to explore.  There are factors to be considered. The school's band director can generally assist with determining if the size of the child will allow him to play a tuba, or if the shape of their mouth will allow them to play the French horn.

Patch: What can learning an instrument do for my child?

Abendroth: It is well documented that musical instruction enhances learning in all subjects since it develops concentration and focus. I have had an appreciative mother come into the store to tell me that her son's math grade rose, and it seems directly connected to the discipline developed by his music training.

Patch: Will learning an instrument or singing instruction help adults?

Abendroth: It seems the majority of the buyers of Steinway pianos are doctors and surgeons. Concentration and focus are vital in that profession and it seems that the discipline of music training enhances that ability.

Patch:  Besides lessons, are there any programs you offer that may encourage children's desire for musical instruction?

Abendroth: Yes. This summer we will be offering a MusiCamp for children ages 5 through 10 as well as a Drama & Music Camp for children ages 7 to 14.  For children ages 8 to 17 we are offering the RocKamp where kids can learn to work together in a band. At the end of each week these band groups give a live performance. At the end of the summer, all bands will perform in concert at a large theater. Group and individual instruction will allow them to develop skill in their instrument of choice.
