Five Questions with Brian Maucere - Owner of UR CrossFit

Staying fit can be fun.

UR CrossFit, in Trinity, is not like most gyms or fitness centers. CrossFit is a technique which provides workouts tailored to individual needs and abilities. Patch spoke with Brian Maucere, the owner of UR CrossFit, about his unique technique:

Patch:  Brian, is there a difference between what UR Crossfit can do for those who want to be fit, and the experience they would have in another fitness center?

Maucere: Yes. We provide functional workouts. This means that the strength, flexibility or stamina training we teach will uses muscles and movements that are used in daily life. Our training is also as close to a personal trainer as you can get without the higher cost. I also think people find our approach fun. When people see the rings and the bars they seem to think back to when they were a kid, and always wanted to try these things in the playground.

Patch: I notice you don't have the machines that you see in a lot of fitness centers. Why is that?

Maucere: With CrossFit we run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry or throw large medicine balls. CrossFit uses power-lifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques as well as dumbbells, gymnastic rings, pull-up bars and medicine balls. We create daily workout routines. These develop cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination and accuracy.

Patch: How do you know if you're making progress?

Maucere: We track your time to perform various tasks and compare it with your former ability.  This is very encouraging. You're not compared with anyone but yourself. We include a nutritional program to give you a guide to changes you can make in that area as well. As you begin to feel stronger and more physically capable - you know you're making progress.

Patch: How does that work if a class has a mixture of couch potatoes and former weightlifters?

Maucere: That's not a problem. The difference in each clients program is merely degree. So a routine for the former weightlifter will encompass activities to challenge his abilities. The degree of these same activities will be less for the former couch potato. So, over time, both will develop greater proficiency.

Patch: How many students train at a time?

Maucere: We keep our classes small. I generally train no more than eight at a time. This way everyone can get individualized attention. That is the beauty of CrossFit. You really get the right program for your specific needs.  This is very different from walking into a gym with lots of equipment and trying to figure out what areas you need to work on. We guide our clients in the processes that will help them meet their goals.

CrossFit training is a different approach to fitness. The individualized approach gives one a more specific target. It is now being adapted to programs in nearly 2,000 gyms worldwide and by many fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and military organizations.
