Hurricane Irma: Pasco Suspends Fire Operations

With winds increasing, it's only becoming more dangerous for first responders, so fire departments are suspending operations.

PASCO COUNTY, FL — The Pasco Division of Emergency Management sent out a press release at 10:30 p.m. Sunday warning that Pasco County Fire Rescue his suspending operations due to heavy sustained winds from Hurricane Irma.

The height of firetrucks is the problem. "Sustained winds are 40 mph or stronger, and it is no longer safe for high-profile fire rescue vehicles to be on the road," the press release said, adding that responding to emergency calls would put first responders in life-threatening situations.

They urge residents to stay sheltered where they are, and remind them to "follow safety precautions" as the destructive hurricane makes its way through.
