Pedestrian Killed on U.S. 19

The New Port Richey woman was crossing the southbound lanes when she was struck Sunday night.

A 66-year-old New Port Richey woman is dead following a fatal crash on U.S. 19, south of Alternate 19 Sunday night.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 9 p.m. as Denise Gajus was attempting to walk westbound across the southbound lanes of U.S. 19. As she was crossing, a Toyota 4 Runner driven by Enriquita Espina, 58, of St. Petersburg was heading south in the center lane of U.S. 19.

Gajus, troopers say, failed to yield for the Toyota, which struck her.

Gajus suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident followed another crash in the area that occurred just before 8 p.m.

Charges are pending in the crash.
