Stolen Vehicle Crashed into 97-Year-Old's Home, Troopers Say

The driver of the vehicle now faces a number of charges.

A 97-year-old Pasco County woman has a home that’s unlivable following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle that ended when the truck in question crashed into her home Sunday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the agency was notified about an active pursuit involving the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office of a stolen Chevrolet pickup truck around 7:25 a.m. Troopers say the truck was traveling east on Stone Road, approaching Candlewick Lane in Port Richey. The truck sailed through a stop sign, left the road and struck the house at 8846 Candlewick Lane, troopers said. After crashing into the home, the driver and passenger took off on foot, but were caught by Pasco deputies.

Elga Matis, 97, was at home when the crash occurred. While Matis was not injured, her home “has been deemed unlivable by the Pasco County Building Inspector as a result of the crash,” a highway patrol report noted. Neighbors are helping care for the woman as repairs are made.
