Vandal Strikes Satanic Temple's Florida Holiday Display

Law enforcement officials say they have a woman in custody.

Just one day after the Satanic Temple’s holiday display went up for viewing in the entry rotunda of the Florida Capitol, a vandal has damaged it.

Police have a woman in custody and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it anticipates making an arrest in the case, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Details about how the display was damaged were not readily available.

The display features an angel falling into the fiery pits of hell. It has the words β€œHappy Holidays from the Satanic Temple” written on it, as well.

The New York-based temple’s controversial display was approved earlier this year by the Florida Department of Management Services. When a similar request was filed last year, the agency told the temple its display was β€œgrossly offensive.”

This year, however, the temple brought in some legal help from Americans United for Separation of Church and State to push its right to put up a display for the holiday season in the Capitol building, the paper reported.

Lucien Greaves, spokesman for the temple, told the Orlando Sentinel that the lawyers seemed to make all the difference this year.

β€œWe hope that, this holiday season, everybody can put their religious differences aside and respect that the celebratory spirit of responsible hedonism is available to all,” the paper quoted Greaves as saying prior to the display’s installation in the rotunda.

Police have yet to release the name of the woman in custody.
