Windmeal Inn: Much more than you pay for
Have breakfast in a family-friendly atmosphere
Pete and Cindi opened the on Route 54 with the intention of providing family cooking without fuss and fanfare. My only disappointment is that they’re only open for breakfast and lunch. Based on the quality of these meals, dinner would be an added treat.
The Windmeal occupies a cute storefront in a Tudor-style mall. It’s decorated with kitschy pictures, plaques and sayings. We found it through an online search of brunch places in New Port Richey. We were greeted by Cindi with instructions to “sit wherever you like.” Coffee was served quickly, a rich brew served in large, hefty mugs, not those little diner cups. Three servers, and Cindi herself, all work together to make sure that no one waits for anything. And, not to be forgotten, Pete is in the kitchen.
My eggs Benedict were perfectly poached. The whites were firm with yolks that covered the plate with liquid sunshine when I cut into it. The hollandaise was rich and creamy with just enough lemon. The hash browns are crispy and light. My partner had a mushroom and cheese omelet that was generously portioned, light and fluffy. My only complaint was with the corned beef hash. It was made with large pieces of potatoes, which I would have preferred to be diced. But it was excellent hash; very tasty. I observed two men at an adjacent table enjoying steak sandwiches for an early lunch.

Everyone is friendly. There’s no need to look for your server. Anyone will refill your beverage or bring you more jam. The Windmeal is definitely a family operation (one of the other servers is Cindi’s daughter) and, as I said earlier, Pete is in the kitchen. Toward the end of our meal Cindi asked if we were new to the restaurant, told us a little more about it and generally made us feel very comfortable while bragging just a bit. And she has every right to brag.
Prices are exceptionally reasonable, and, contrary to the adage, you get much more than you pay for.
