She wasn’t the most outstanding player, didn’t make a last-second shot, or set any records this season. Admittedly, she’s not even a great athlete. But last night at the ESPY Awards, Robin Roberts stole the show. Known for her career as a broadcast journalist, Roberts received the Arthur Ashe Award of Courage for her battles against breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). She graciously accepted the award, and then shared an uplifting message of courage and hope. She gave 3 great ways to face adversity:
Fear is normal. We all have it and deal with it in one way or another. It might come in the form of doubt, disappointment, or even a bad report from the doctor. Fear has a way of creeping into our lives any chance it gets…but it doesn’t have to stay. Like Robin Roberts, there comes a point where we must decide to be a victor or victim, to overcome or be defeated. And faith is what makes the difference. In the Bible, Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that “Faith is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen.” You might not be able to see it, explain it, or know how it’s going to work out, but faith brings hope into every situation.
2. Turn your mess into a message.I read that after Robin Roberts announced she had MDS, there was an 1800% increase in bone marrow donors the next day. While you probably don’t have the same platform or influence as Roberts, there are people who need to hear your story. You have a testimony. And one of the best ways to encourage yourself through a struggle is to share the message. It might be a friend, coworker or loved one. Remember, there are others who’ve been in your shoes, or will go through what you are facing. Take time to encourage someone through the pain, and share your story.

Roberts said last night, “True strength isn’t when you face down life’s challenges on your own…it’s when you take them on by accepting the help, faith, and love of others, and knowing you are lucky to have them.” No matter where you’re at or what you’re going through, you’re becoming more and more like the people around you. We all need people in our lives who affirm, challenge, and encourage us through the ups and downs. The greatest victories are won by the best teams, not individuals. If you’re facing a difficult situation, keep listening to the voices in your life that speak words of encouragement.
