Over the next day or two, we'll be blogging about things you need to know if you're a pet owner. You may want to print out these articles or forward them to your email for safekeeping because if a hurricane does threaten our area, you're going to need some guidelines! As always, sharing the article is encouraged.
**Evacuation Centers do not allow pets unless they are service animals. Don't waste time taking your pet and being turned away. Instead, pre-arrange with family, friends or co-workers in non-evacuation areas to care for your pets when a hurricane appears imminent. Don't wait until the last moment to transport your pets! We have plenty of advance warning of hurricane danger so don't get caught unprepared. If you don't know anyone close enough to our area, contact hotels/motels in non-evacuation areas to determine if they're pet friendly...in advance of the storm.
**Make sure your pets are current on their vaccinations and take proof wherever your pets ultimately go during the storm. If they require medication, take enough for at least 2 weeks. Make sure your pet has an ID tag with your contact information, too. Far too many animals get displaced for various reasons. Make sure someone can find you! If you leave your home seeking shelter during a storm, take a photo of your pet with you.
