Does the ambiance matter?
Would more kids read independently if we provided them with a better reading environment?
In this economy, the last thing that people are spending money on is renovating a school library or a bookstore. But, I am in the business of inspiring young people to read, and I think the ambiance of a reading area is very important.
A recent study conducted by Rutgers University discussed the impact that a school library has on test scores. Let’s face it; you want to spend time in an area that is aesthetically pleasing. The New Tampa Regional Library has a welcoming area for kids that offer space and shelving on a child’s level. I am addicted to the white chocolate mochas at the Coffee Beanery and am pleased that they made an attempt to offer an area for kid’s to read and play while their parent enjoys a great beverage. Book Swap is kid friendly in the sense that they allow kids to be kids; but the area for kids is very confined. And then there is Barnes and Noble which of course provides a great atmosphere at an inflated price.
