Update: New Tampa Brush Fire Likely Accidental, Officials Say

The blaze broke out on Cross Creek Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

A 1.5-acre brush fire near St. Mark’s Catholic Church in New Tampa was likely accidental, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

City crews responded to the 9724 Cross Creek Blvd. church around 1:52 p.m. Wednesday after reports came in about the fire. Units from three stations worked to bring the blaze under control and were able to do so around 2:30 p.m., an email to media from the agency stated.

While initial reports from the agency stated that the church had been evacuated, officials clarified, saying occupants were directed to remain in the air conditioning to prevent heat or respiratory issues.

As for the cause of the fire, officials say a worker was outside mowing grass in a field behind the church when the blaze sparked.

“The driver of the mower said he looked back and saw a bush burning so he immediately ran to the church to call for assistance,” the email stated. “The fire spread rapidly with flames as high as 40 feet.”

No injuries were reported.
