A Tribute To Levon Helm and The Band
Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm was an American rock multi-instrumentalist and actor who achieved fame as the drummer and frequent lead and backing vocalist for The Band. Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country-accented voice, and creative drumming style highlighted on many of the Band's recordings, such as "The Weight", "Up on Cripple Creek", "Ophelia" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". It would be impossible to overestimate Levon's towering influence on any musician in the last 40 years or so who's opted to mix rock 'n' roll with other traditional rural American music forms such as country, blues and bluegrass. Simply put, if the Americana movement is a nation, Levon would be one of its founding fathers.
