Accused Freedom High Bomb Plotter to Be Charged As Adult

Jared Cano, 17, will be remanded to Hillsborough County Jail.

The 17-year-old charged with plotting to blow up Freedom High School will be tried as an adult.

An anonymous tip two weeks ago led law enforcement to Jared Cano, and a diary with “minute-by-minute” details for wreaking havoc on the first day of school, according to authorities. It is believed he was acting alone.

Cano is currently in the custody of the Florida Department of
Juvenile Justice. Once a warrant is processed and issued, authorities say, Cano will be remanded to the Hillsborough County Jail.

"He is not being transferred to the jail tonight and when exactly that will happen is undetermined at this time," Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon wrote in the news release this evening. "That's all the information I have at this time."

Cano is charged with "threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device." He also faces additional charges of possession of bomb-making materials, cultivation of marijuana because authorities found plants growing in his room and possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.
