Number of Registered Republicans in Hillsborough Grows

There are about 8,000 more registered Republicans in Hillsborough County than last year, though Democrats still outnumber GOP voters by more than 50,000 in Hillsborough, records show.

The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections office has unofficially closed the books on voter registration ahead of Florida's 2012 Republican presidential primary, with 231,740 Republicans having filed as of Tuesday. That's up from 223,342 Hillsborough Republicans in 2010.

Only registered members of the Republican Party are eligible to vote in the Jan. 31 primary.

There are also 284,557 Democrats and 170,565 "other" voters in Hillsborough. The totals still need to be verified by the state, Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections spokesman Travis Abercrombie said.

Hillsborough Voting History

In Florida's last GOP primary in 2008, 48 percent of Hillsborough's 213,362 registered Republicans turned out at the polls. John McCain won the Hillsborough vote, edging Mitt Romney by about 8,500 votes and taking Florida and the GOP nomination before falling to Barack Obama in the general election.
