Officers Wrangle New Tampa Gator

The catch-and-release took place in the Market Square Plaza.

A Tampa Police Department K-9 officer and his dog got more than they bargained for Friday night when they decided to take a short break to stretch at the Market Square plaza in New Tampa.

Officer Raymond Wurst and his dog came across an alligator May 24 near the loading dock at Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts, 6234 Commerce Palms Drive. Not wanting to risk employees coming across the unwanted visitor, Wurst and fellow Officer Michael Braband swung into action.

Using a K-9 catch pole, they removed the gator and brought it to a nearby swamp, a Tampa Police Department spokeswoman said.
