Q&A With Wharton Soccer's Felipe Desousa

New Tampa Patch caught up with the senior forward after the Wharton Wildcat's 1-0 victory over Freedom.

The Wildcats boys soccer team lives under the shadow of the 2008 State Championship team. Last year, they made regionals with a young, inexperienced team.

"It was a bit of a surprise that we made it last year," said head coach Scott Ware. "It just goes to show it's about when you peak that's most important."

Ware mentioned that the 2008 team went 8-5-2 in the regular season.

This year, the Cats have some veteran leadership. One of those leaders is senior forward Felipe Desousa. Patch caught up with the teen recently.

Patch: Are you ready to step into a leadership role on the team this year?

Desousa: As long as my team needs me, I'll be there. I feel like I've found the position I'm most comfortable with: flexing back and forth between forward and midfield.

Patch: What colleges are you looking into playing for?

Desousa: I've started talking to USF but UCF is also an option I'm considering.

Patch: How far do you think the team can go this year?

Desousa: We are trying for state champs.

Patch: How many goals can I put you down for this year?

Desousa: Ten.

Patch: Who are some players you model your game after?

Desousa: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho. I like the way the Brazilians play, they are always having fun.

Patch: Will the U.S. men ever win a World Cup?

Desousa: Yeah.
