Scam Artists Target Elderly in New Tampa, Police Say

The suspects have been approaching elderly women in New Tampa and elsewhere in Hillsborough County and beyond and convincing them to take cash out of their bank accounts, according to police.

Tampa Police are asking for the public's help in finding up to four suspects who they say have scammed elderly victims around the area, including one in New Tampa, out of about $60,000 in the past two months.

Detectives say a man and woman have been approaching elderly women and offering to split with them some money that they found. In each case, the couple convinced the victims to give them cash from their personal bank accounts in order to receive a portion of the found money.

There appear to be four different suspects, Thomas said, but the victims are always approached by one man and one woman.
