New Tampa Senior Group Provides Friendship, Fun

The group is currently accepting new members who are at least 60 years old.

The way the New Tampa Seniors group sees it, many people could use more activities and friends in life. But it's not always easy.

"For example, the economy has made travel less affordable," it reads on the group's meetup.com page. "Some groups are trying to make money out of people, or are 'dating groups' that are uncomfortable. Some of our members are not interested in activities like bridge or golf."

New Tampa Seniors aims to provide an alternative, a free and safe way to meet with others who are flexible and looking to have fun. The group is for men and women aged 60-80 who are seeking friendship.

They use planning sessions once a month -- held at Club Tampa Palms -- to decide which fun-filled events they will be attending. Some up-and-coming plans include a guided tour of historic Ybor City on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The group currently has 31 current members and is free to join. Chairwoman Mags Davies said she has really enjoyed making new friends and getting out of the house.

“I came to help head the group after my husband passed away and I needed something more,” she said. Her daughter Glynis Ross-Munro founded the group and wanted there to be no ulterior motives, just companionship.

Sandra Lachs, who does public relations for the group, said it has helped her tremendously.

“It’s a group of loving people going through some of the same stuff. It really has many meanings to each individual,” she said. "We have just laughed and laughed."

But it's not just about fun either. The group is now donating clothing for foster children to Joshua House.

“If we can do a bit of charity along the way, that is great,” Davies added.
