Procrastinators Still Have Time to Buy a Christmas Tree

The Williams family has been selling trees along Bruce B. Downs Boulevard for 23 years.

The Williams Christmas Trees stand on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard looked “like a forest” several weeks back. Now, those 850-1,000 trees have been reduced to about 100 or so as of Wednesday night.

That means procrastinators can still swing by the stand on property and pick up a tree from owner Jack Williams and sons Spencer, 17, and Caleb, 10 – just in time for Christmas.

Holiday music pours from a speaker while Christmas tree branches burn in a large drum, bringing more of that festive scent to the nostrils of customers. The Williams family sells North Carolina Fraser firs.

“It’s the longest-lasting and best-smelling,” Williams said of the variety.

The family sells 6-8-foot trees from $49-$69 and 8-9-foot trees for $89, depending on the grade. His stand will also deliver and set up trees.

How is business this year?

“They said on the news that artificial sales are up 30 percent. … But same thing with live trees,” Williams said. “We’re up about 30 percent from last year. ... Of course it’s not like it was in 2005, 2006 when the economy was better.”

The stand, at 16190 Bruce B Downs Blvd., is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
