Wharton's 5K Fundraiser Yields Record Turnout
Patch pointed its lens at the event on Saturday. Were you there?
Bruce B. Downs Boulevard was even more crowded than usual Saturday morning, as nearly 200 runners flooded the sidewalks for annual 5K run and 1-mile fun run.
The turnout was the best in the event’s seven-year history, according to race coordinator Allison Ilcken.

“We’re delighted to see so many runners this year,” she said. “This event is the school’s only fundraiser and it has really evolved.”
Proceeds from the race support the school’s Wishes for Wharton Foundation, which benefits students in a variety of ways.

This year’s pre-race gathering not only featured a silent auction, including bids on tickets for premium seats to Buccaneers, Lightning and Rays games, but also a far-from-silent DJ.
“And I think the weather helped,” said Ilcken. As the runners took off at 8:45 a.m., the temperature was a sticky 64 degrees and quickly climbing.
It was Ilcken’s third year as coordinator, with lousy weather putting a damper on her first two years, so the nice day was a blessing.
“Two years ago it was freezing and last year we had drizzle,” she said. “Actually, it would probably be better for the runners if it was a bit cooler, but we’ll take it.”
