Wharton Hockey Team Holding Fund-Raiser

The Wildcats will host a golf tournament Aug. 15 at Hunter's Green Country Club.

Playing on the hockey team may be a blast for its players, but it can be difficult on the parents.

The Wildcats are a club team, meaning there is no financial support from the school, and associated costs can run high – with an hour of practice time on the rink running the team $350, for example.

“It’s completely paid for through parents,” said team manager Matt Camposano, adding each player is responsible for forking over about $1,000 per season just for the privilege to play. “We’re always looking to raise funds. Hockey in Florida isn’t a sanctioned sport so every team in Florida is in the same boat.”

With a vision of new jerseys and a second weekly practice this year, this is an opportune time to scrape up some dough. Their second-annual golf fund-raiser will be held Monday, Aug. 15, at the Hunter’s Green Country Club. It will be a “scramble tournament” that is open to players of all skill levels. Sign up as a foursome (individuals can sign up, too, but will be joined with a team).

The entry fee is $75 per person and includes driving range balls, contest holes, a gift bag and food and drinks. Sponsorships are available in $100 and $400 amounts. To register, or for more information, visit www.whartonhockey.com.

Camposano said whatever the team raises will be much appreciated.

“We want to make it affordable so everyone who wants to play, can,” he said of the hockey program.
