Most of us tend to have a neighbor or two who just aren't "dog people". (We, frankly, don't understand those people but each to their own!) :-) So how can we do our part to smooth out neighborly relations? Here are just a few tips on how we can show the world that dog owners are among the most amazing, friendly, responsible people on our street.
Always, always pick up after your pet. You know that one time you left poop in the neighbors yard because it was 10pm and no one saw your pet actually do that? Well, someone saw. Even if they didn't, it's the right thing to do. Always.
Always walk your dog on a leash. Even the most well disciplined hounds will occasionally run after another animal, small child or car. Your neighborhood will feel safer because it will be safer. See how that works? Trust me, people notice and they appreciate it.
If you have a cranky, unfriendly dog with a bad personality (similar to that uncle we only see on holidays), walk him/her away from your neighbors. Far away. People who aren't "dog people" become more committed in their thinking if they only witness growling, barking pups.
Does your neighbor spend hours every weekend planting petunias that line their driveway? Tell Spot to be patient while you hustle him/her to an appropriate bush or tree. It's just the courteous thing to do.
Before you know it, your neighbors will be inviting you for dinner and putting a place setting for your pet, too.
