Central Florida Comes Together to Honor 9/11 Through Service

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance provides an opportunity for Central Florida residents to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and recognize the courage of first responders, military personnel, volunteers, and ordinary citizens who served others. Rather than remembering only through words, participants can turn remembrance into meaningful action.

Central Florida offers several ways to participate. On September 11, 2026, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida will bring volunteers together at the Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando to pack 210,000 meals for families experiencing food insecurity. Other service activities include:

Blood Donation: Participate in a Oneblood drive to help replenish local blood banks and support those in need of transfusions.

Community Clean-Up: Join or organize a neighborhood clean-up event to help beautify local beaches, streets, or public spaces. Keep Orlando Beautiful has a program to clean and beautify our streets.

Homeless Shelter Support: Provide care packages and essentials for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Orlando Union Rescue Center is accepting donations and volunteers.

Tutoring and Mentoring: Offer your time to tutor students or mentor youth, helping them with their studies or providing guidance and support. FreeTutoringCenter.com offers volunteer tutoring experiences.

Environmental Conservation: Participate in activities like tree planting, recycling drives, or conservation projects to support environmental sustainability. Sign up to be a volunteer at Conservation Florida.

Care Packages for Troops: Assemble and send care packages to military personnel stationed overseas to show appreciation and support. Operation Gratitude has a great care package program.

Animal Shelter Volunteering: Volunteer at an animal shelter by walking dogs, cleaning, or helping with adoption events. VolunteerMatch.com has a listing of local shelters that need volunteers.

Elderly Care Assistance: Spend time with elderly residents at nursing homes or senior centers, offering companionship and assistance with daily activities. Volunteers are the heart of the Meal of Wheels program.
