The Constitution Isn’t Just History—It’s Your Child’s Future

September 17th is Constitution Day for Central Florida and the Nation. Understanding the Constitution isn't just about learning a historic document—it's about helping children understand the rights, responsibilities, and principles that shape their lives as future citizens.

Constitution Day gives parents the opportunity for families to help children understand one of the most important documents in American history. The U.S. Constitution established the framework of our government and protects fundamental rights and freedoms. More importantly, learning about the Constitution helps children understand that democracy depends on informed, engaged citizens.

At home, children can copy the Preamble, create a family "Bill of Rights," hold a mock election, or design a family constitution. Free Constitution Day games and lessons are also available through icivics.org When children learn not only what the Constitution says but why it matters, they begin to see themselves as participants in America's civic life.

Teaching the Constitution does not have to mean memorizing complicated language or historical dates. Children can discover its value by connecting constitutional ideas to everyday life. Parents can discuss the First Amendment and ask children why freedom of speech matters. Or they could discuss the three branches of government and have children imagine how a classroom might work if students created their own rules. Older children can explore the Bill of Rights and debate which rights they believe are most important.

Families in Central Florida can also make Constitution Day an interactive experience. On September 17th, the The Lou Frey Institute at the University of Central Florida will host a public Constitution Day forum focused on preparing young people for citizenship. Valencia College is also hosting Constitution Day activities at several Central Florida campuses, featuring educational resources, discussions, and hands-on activities. For a family history outing, visit the Orange County Regional History Center in downtown Orlando or the Presidents Hall of Fame in Clermont.
