Pinkard said that the victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

"King was being playful with him due to it being his birthday," Pinkard added. "King then hugged her brother as he held the handgun."

But as the 13-year-old turned to walk away, her brother "pointed the handgun to the back of the victim's head and pulled the trigger, shooting her," said Pinkard.

Police said that the teenager obtained the semi-automatic handgun from a 14-year-old friend, who was taken into custody on an unrelated charge.
