2011 FCAT Scores: Reading, Math, & Science Released
Some Palm Harbor schools show gains. Math scores prove challenging as Pinellas County schools move to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).
With the end of the 2011 school year just a day away, newly-released FCAT scores reveal students in the Pinellas County School District are facing some challenges when it comes to transitioning to a new, tougher testing system.
The Florida Department of Education released 2011 FCAT scores for grades 4-10 in reading and math, along with scores for grades 5, 8 and 11 in science.
District-wide, Pinellas County Schools' scores for reading continued to meet or exceed the state average in most grade levels.

However, the district says math scores continue to be a challenge as Pinellas County Schools move toward the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) along with a tougher FCAT 2.0.
"We know the answers for improved student performance rest with effective classroom teacher supported by strong school based leaders. We are committed to providing meaningful professional development, clearly defined curriculum and ongoing assessments," says Pinellas County Schools Superintendent Julie Janssen.

As for the scores of individual schools in Palm Harbor, Sutherland Elementary was noted by the school district as having some of the greatest gains in student scores at Level 3 and above.
Sutherland Elementary showed a 26 percent increase in 5th grade math and a 15 percent increase in 5th grade science.
Palm Harbor Middle School was among the middle schools noted by the school district as having some of the greatest gains in student scores at Level 3 and above.
Palm Harbor Middle School showed a 4 percent increase in 7th grade reading scores.
