Blogging Chimp's Latest Work: No Ordinary Troop

Baboons may not be "King Of The Jungle", but they sure act like it. Learn more about my magnificent neighbors.

As you can imagine, our baboon troop is not an ordinary family. There are five species of baboon: Hamadryas, Guinea, Olive, Yellow, and Chacma. My baboon friends are Hamadryas baboons.

Baboons are tough primates. Flashing of the eyelids, showing of teeth, making gestures, and chasing after intruders are some of the tactics used by baboons. Typically, people think of monkeys as swinging in the trees and making nests; however, the baboon species of monkeys actually spend their days on the ground. When traveling across the open savannah in Africa, baboons can be seen in troops of 5 all the way up to 250 members.

My baboon neighbors can be seen grooming each other most of the day, as it is a social behavior among primates. Did you know that when primates groom each other, most of the time it is not for bugs? It is actually for the salt found in their sweat.
