Many Events Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

There are a wide variety of weekend events to choose from in the Tampa Bay area that pay tribute to the victims of the attacks.

Events are planned in Palm Harbor and throughout the Tampa Bay area this weekend to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Here are a few nearby observances going on:

  • 9/11 Community Memorial Service, 4 p.m. Sunday 9/11, hosted by the Crystal Beach Community Church, 625 Crystal Beach Ave. Non-denominational beachfront service pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the attacks. The names of the victims will be written on ribbons and tied to wreaths that will be placed in the water. (727) 784-8222.
  • Oldsmar 9/11 Remembrance Service, 10 a.m. Sunday Sept. 11 at Oldsmar Fire Rescue, 225 Pine Ave. N, Oldsmar. 9/11 survivor Anne Koster will be the keynote speaker. A steel beam from the World Trade Center will be on display along with a brick walkway inscribed with the names of the 343 firefighters who died. The Fresh Start Church will hold a cookout after the ceremony.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Rays will also commemorate the attacks during their home games Sunday:

The Rays play the Boston Red Sox at 1:40 p.m. at Tropicana Field. The first 10,000 kids 14 and younger will get a free Rays fire helmet.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. The Glazer Family Foundation and Support the Troops Inc. will hold a military supply drive from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outside the stadium. Fans are asked to consider bringing coffee, hygiene items, nonperishable food and new or slightly used CDs or DVDs to donate to U.S. troops serving abroad.
