Palm Harbor Driver Involved in Deadly Accident

Clearwater Police say a pedestrian did not use a crosswalk while trying to cross McMullen Booth Rd. and was hit by a car driven by a Palm Harbor woman.

Clearwater Police have identified a man who was struck and killed by a car while trying to cross a busy north Pinellas County road Thursday evening.

Investigators say 79 year-old Robert C. Groening was hit in the 2900 block of McMullen Booth Rd. while trying to cross from the west side of the road. He made it to the curb lane on the east side of the road when he was hit by a 2006 Chevrolet driven by Melissa Leiner, 57, of Palm Harbor. This happened across the street from the entrance of the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course.Β Authorities were notified about the accident just before 7 p.m.Β 

Groening did not use a crosswalk and he was not at an intersection, according to police. Investigators say there was no indication that Leiner was impaired, she was not cited or charged.

Two of the northbound lanes of McMullen Booth Rd. were closed for a few hours while police investigated.
