Palm Harbor Kids Head Back to School

Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies out in force for the first day of the school year.

Pinellas County School Officials say the school year is off to a good start; everything went as planned this morning as kids headed back to school.

"We had a very good school opening, we're very pleased… it went like clockwork," said Andrea Zahn, Spokesperson for the Pinellas County School District.

Zahn says everyone on staff was prepared and school buses ran smoothly.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies were nearby to make sure that drivers obeyed the school zone speed limits. 

This year, there were three fewer crossing guards at school crosswalks in Palm Harbor due to budget cuts. However, the sheriff's office placed deputies in the area and made sure the locations had flashing lights and signs warning drivers about the crosswalks.

There was also plenty of hand-holding and lots of smiles this morning as kids in Palm Harbor made their way back to school. Many parents walked their children to Highland Lakes Elementary School this morning.

Danny Holdsworth, who is in the 3rd grade at rode his bike to school. His mother Anne and the family dog, Jesse, walked with him.

Amy Baker walked her seven-year old daughter to Highland Lakes Elementary. This is the first year the 2nd grader is attending the school. Amy took a photo of her daughter posing in front of the sign, to commemorate the occasion.
