PHUH Student Volunteer Wins National Award

Palm Harbor University High senior Bansi Savla is one of three volunteers in the country who were honored with the "Volunteers are the Foundation of Hospice Award" in San Diego last month.

No doubt, it's a moment that senior Bansi Savla and her parents will remember. The PHUH medical magnet student was recently honored with the prestigious "Volunteers are the Foundation of Hospice Award" from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Savla and her family flew to San Diego for the Oct. 7 conference where she was presented with the award.

Savla received a standing ovation after speaking about her life-changing experience as a volunteer at Suncoast Hospice. Actress, Torrey DeVitto presented her with the award.

Savla says her most meaningful moments of service with have been bringing joy to patients and families. She loves doing kind acts like brightening their rooms with her handmade crafts or delivering freshly-baked cookies. She also enjoys learning the life stories of the patients she films for the Lifetime Legacies program.

Savla has served in almost every role during the two years she's volunteered at Suncoast Hospice and also received the Suncoast Hospice "Teen Volunteer of the Year" award.
