Prescribed Burn Friday in Brooker Creek

If you see a smoky haze or smell smoke in the Brooker Creek Preserve area Friday, it's most likely due to a prescribed burn.

The Florida Forest Service will conduct a prescribed burn from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday on a 12-acre area of the Brooker's Creek Preserve near the Ridgemoor subdivision. Prescribed burns are conducted to improve forest habitats. They also help reduce buildups of vegetation which could become a fire hazard for forests and neighboring communities, according to the Florida Forest Service website.

Firefighters have battled a couple wildfires in the Brooker's Creek Preserve this year.

For up-to-date information on current burns on conservation lands managed by Pinellas County, please call the BURN HOTLINE at (727) 582-BURN (2876).
