Vacant lot near Panama City Mall awaits future U.S. 231 project (bradenton.com) — Drivers in Panama City should know a vacant lot by the old Panama City Mall is reserved for a future retention pond tied to widening U.S. 231 from four to six lanes. FDOT is budgeting tens of millions through 2030 for right-of-way purchases, while similar widening work on U.S. 98 near Panama City Beach continues in multiple phases.
2. The countdown is on for the annual Central Panhandle Fair (bradenton.com) — Panama City residents can start planning now for the Central Panhandle Fair, running Oct. 6-10 at the fairgrounds on East 15th Street. Organizers promise rides, food, and educational exhibits on agriculture, crafts, and local heritage, continuing a Bay County tradition that's drawn tens of thousands of visitors for decades.
3. Panama City man killed in officer-involved shooting (bradenton.com) — A 28-year-old Panama City man was fatally shot by law enforcement early Tuesday after an armed-disturbance call at a Lombardy Avenue home in St. Andrews. Police say he claimed to have a handgun and charged officers before being shot, though investigators later found he was unarmed; state authorities are now reviewing the incident as a mental health-related case.
4. 'Together, We Are More' / 'Unidos, Somos Más': FSU Panama City celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month (wjhg.com) — Florida State University Panama City just launched its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with music, dance, and powerful personal stories at the Holley Academic Center. Students and community members heard messages about embracing Latino identity, overcoming language insecurities, and supporting neighbors, with speakers tying cultural pride to resilience and unity across Northwest Florida.
5. Florida's Panama City Symphony Announces Four Music-Director Candidates (symphony.org) — Panama City Symphony is rolling out a finalist concert series to help choose its next music director, with four conductors each leading a program during the 2026–27 season. Performances at Bay High School, Arnold High School, and St. Andrews Baptist Church will feature major works by Dvořák, Piazzolla, Beethoven, Rautavaara, and Tchaikovsky.
