1. Arc Gateway to host a free fishing clinic for people with disabilities in Pensacola (wkrg.com) — A free fishing clinic for people with disabilities is coming to Vince J. Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park in downtown Pensacola on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon. Hosted by Arc Gateway, the event includes hands-on fishing lessons, marine education booths, and free rods, reels, shirts, and bait for the first 250 people who pre-register.
2. Pensacola receives state grant to establish new shipbuilding headquarters (wkrg.com) — Pensacola has secured a $9 million state grant to help establish Birdon America's new $275 million shipbuilding headquarters in the city, projected to create about 2,000 jobs. Many of those positions are expected to offer salaries from $68,000 to $112,000, with additional funding sought from Triumph Gulf Coast and federal sources to expand the maritime industrial base.
3. Argonauts to honor late player Benjamin Conken during upcoming season (wkrg.com) — University of West Florida's football team in Pensacola will honor late player Benjamin Conken all season after his death from cancer at age 20. Coaches remember his toughness and kindness, and the Argonauts plan a moment of silence and helmet stickers, starting with their Aug. 27 home game against Southern Illinois.
4. Here's the next big ship you'll see at the Pensacola port (pnj.com) — If you're near the Port of Pensacola this weekend, you may spot the massive LNG tanker M/V HLS BILBAO in for maintenance, with the TX-10,000 expected back around Aug. 23. Port officials also say American Magic's SailGP training base should be operating by mid-October, kicking off a five-year run of off-season sailing activity in Pensacola.
5. Palm Beach County Clerk's OfficeAwards $4,500 In Scholarships (gotowncrier.com) — One Palm Beach County scholarship winner is heading to the University of West Florida in Pensacola to study nursing, highlighting the school as a draw for students across the state. The $1,500 awards come from clerk's office employees who donate through a Dress Down Program that has raised significant funds for local charities since 2021.
