1. Pensacola CRA Advances $695,000 Bayou District Contract for Former Baptist Hospital Campus (newsradio923.com) — Pensacola's Community Redevelopment Agency has endorsed a $695,000 consulting contract with Bayou District Consulting to help shape redevelopment of the former Baptist Hospital campus, despite renewed public opposition. The firm would gather input from residents and stakeholders to test feasible concepts, while any future developer would be chosen separately. City Council must still approve the contract and related funding shift.
2. Former Pensacola contractor Matt Banks takes plea deal, faces up to 25 years in prison (weartv.com) — A former Pensacola contractor has pleaded guilty to 19 felony charges tied to a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme that hit more than 150 victims across Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties. He now faces 11.5 to 25 years in prison and owes about $4.7 million in restitution, with sentencing set for December 4.
3. Pensacola Looks Beyond Bay Center With Broader Redevelopment Plan; Tech Park Investor Interested (newsradio923.com) — Pensacola leaders are exploring a broader redevelopment plan tying the Bay Center area, Technology Park, nearby streets, and Hollice T. Williams Park more closely to downtown. Councilwoman Allison Patton and Mayor D.C. Reeves want to build on past studies to improve walkability, transportation, and economic development. An unnamed private investor is also in talks about a speculative building at the long-vacant Tech Park.
4. Culinary Productions buys Adonna's cafe to transform into event venue (pnj.com) — A well-known Pensacola spot, Adonna's Garden St. Café and Bakery, has been sold and will soon reopen as a smaller, more affordable event venue called Our Garden. Local caterer Michael DeSorbo of Culinary Productions plans only light renovations and is already taking bookings for November and December events, offering an intimate alternative to his larger nearby venue.
5. Gulf Islands National Seashore to close several Florida areas as weather system develops (weartv.com) — Several Gulf Islands National Seashore areas near Pensacola, including Fort Pickens, Opal Beach, Perdido Key's Johnson Beach, and Okaloosa Area, are closing or suspending campground check-ins as a developing weather system approaches. Day-use access will shut down around midday October 7, and campgrounds must be evacuated by 4 p.m. Wednesday, while Naval Live Oaks remains open for now.
